SOLO OR GROUP SESSION?
If you’ve been considering whether you should do a solo portrait session, or a group session, let me explain why a solo session might be the right choice.
Let’s start with group sessions. They can be really fun when you’re taking pictures with some of your best friends from the past four years. Maybe they are people you met in class, or through a fraternity/sorority in Greek life. The energy of a group dynamic can make for some of the best keepsake moments that will last all of you a lifetime.
WHAT’S THE CATCH?
The issue that I’ve noticed throughout the years is that individuals within group sessions usually don’t get much of their own time on-camera. And the more of you there are, the less time each person will get within a given session window. For instance: a group of 10 grads for a 60-minute session means you each get 6 minutes, but not really because you also have to take photos together as a group. So you may only get 3 to 4 minutes, each. And maybe you don’t mind. But…
WHEN IS A SOLO SESSION THE RIGHT CHOICE?
If you’re the type of person who wants a variety of backgrounds (the Uconn sign, Gampel, Horsebarn Hill, Wilbur Cross, etc), a variety of poses at each of those locations, and maybe even wardrobe changes throughout the photoshoot, then I highly recommend a solo session. Solo sessions allow for this variety since the focus is YOU. There’s more attention to detail with posing and angles when there’s more time to focus on one graduate.
